A FATHER has admitted setting fire to his Adelaide home while his wife and two youngest sons were inside.
Alexander Mario Rompapas today pleaded guilty to one count of arson and three aggravated counts of creating risk of harm.
Rompapas, 57, was also charged with aggravated assault and attempting to dissuade a witness – his wife Vassiliki (Vicki) Rompapas – but prosecutors withdrew those counts today.
He had previously pleaded not guilty and his trial was expected to start today.
It was an emotional day in court for Ms Rompapas, who sat in the body of the court and was relieved to see an acknowledgment of guilt.
In May last year, Rompapas threw petrol around his family’s home in Pooraka, a suburb in Adelaide, and set it alight.
The fire caused burns to his two youngest sons, then aged 15 and 17.
Previously Mrs Rompapas had told The Advertiser that she used an old fire extinguisher to save her sons’ lives during the house fire.
“I see my middle son’s feet in flames, he’s running into the courtyard,” she said at the time.
“I see my young son in a fireball, I’m quickly grabbing a fire extinguisher and putting the flames all over his body out, then I chucked him in the shower cubicle – there were flames everywhere.
“I turned the cold water on, my son was really burning up with the pants, he must have pulled the pants off himself and he must have taken skin (off) as well. To see your own kid burn…”
