As United States securities officials meet to determine whether there are credible threats to American national security, France finds itself in a state of martial law with residents being told to stay indoors and official announcements that French borders will be closed.

The State of National Emergency was declared by French president Francois Hollande after massive terror attacks took place all across Paris leaving hundreds dead. The attacks were clearly conducted in a coordinated fashion in order to maximize the loss of life and mental imprint of the act of terror. Four separate attacks took place at and around the same time in four separate locations in Paris. The crisis is still ongoing as authorities are still hunting assailants and many are worried that there may be another wave of attacks in the wings.

Paris Terror Attacks

  1. Explosions outside Stade de France – An apparent suicide bombing was committed outside the Stade de France where Germany and France were playing a soccer game that was being attended by President Hollande, forcing the president to evacuate the stadium and convene an emergency cabinet meeting. A reporter from the Associated Press who was in the stadium at the time of the suicide bombing described two explosions, both loud enough to be heard over the sounds of the fans.
  2. Concert Hall attacks – As many as a hundred people were killed at the concert Venue known as Bataclan during the concert of the America band Eagles of Death Metal. Nearly a hundred hostages were also taken at the venue. One witness who was quoted by BFM TV claims to have heard rounds of automatic rifle fire and screams of “Allahu Akbar!” Other witnesses state they heard the shooter screaming “This is for Syria! This is for Syria!” Other reports claim that grenades were lobbed as well. A separate witness who escaped the concert hall stated, “When they started shooting, we just saw flashes. People got down on the ground right away.” Julien Pearce, a French radio reporter,  was inside the theater when the two gunmen entered. Pearce claims that both men were dressed in black and began shooting what he claims were AK-47s. Pearce stated that neither men wore masks and neither did they say anything. The gunfire lasted for about 10-15 minutes and after the wounded fell on the floor the gunmen approached them and shot them again, execution style. Pearce said he personally saw 20-25 bodies on the floor. Other witnesses described the gunmen as firing shotguns into the crowd. Police killed two armed men whom they believed open fire at the theater.
  3. Restaurant, Le Carillon, Shooting – At least 12 people were killed in a separate attack at a restaurant in Paris’ 10th Arrondissement, which is close to the offices of the Charlie Hebdo magazine publication. At this time, the assailants have not been caught. The shooting is being described as a drive-by.
  4. Separate Restaurant Shooting – In another shooting at Le Petite Cambodge, a restaurant that was supposedly filled with foreign students. Shooting began around 7 p.m., local time. According to witnesses, one or two cars were used in the shooting.
