A 25-year-old woman has made a brief appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates Court accused of assaulting her two-year-old daughter.
Melissa Ngati of Deer Park in the city’s west is charged with intentionally causing serious injury to the girl.
Police say the toddler was taken to the Sunshine Hospital yesterday suffering life-threatening injuries.
She was later transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
The alleged assault took place on Tuesday.
Ngati is 35 weeks pregnant and appeared upset and teary in the dock.
Her lawyer told the court she was emotional and distressed and needed to see a doctor as she has gestational diabetes.
She did not apply for bail and will return to court in February.
