In February, the British police forcefully dismantled the Occupy London protesters’ camp outside the St Paul’s Cathedral.
The anti-capitalist protesters had set up the camp outside the church after they were prevented from occupying a square in the heart of the City of London.
The protesters stayed outside St Paul’s for four and a half months until they were forcibly evicted by the British police in February. They have now returned to the church to express their solidarity with a global movement as they were joined by the protesters from Spanish Indignados group.
“Nowhere in Europe is the unequal distribution of wealth as striking as in the UK. The richest 1,000 persons, just 0.005% of the adult population, increased their wealth by £155bn over the last three years,” the Huffington Post UK quoted an Occupy spokesperson as saying.
“Whilst the rest of the country is being crippled by austerity, the very same people who caused the crisis are now sitting on wealth even greater than what they had before the crash?” the spokesperson added.
Media reports said the City of London Police had a “proportionate” operation in place. Moreover, protesters said on their Twitter account that police officers have raised their batons to provoke the demonstrators.
