Five people have been killed and more than two dozen others have been injured in an explosion targeting a passenger train in Pakistan’s Kashmore District.
The blast on Sunday struck the train in the northern part of Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh while it was on its way to the northwestern city of Peshawar from the southern port city of Karachi, local media reported.
Deputy Police Superintendent Asghar Shah told reporters that four compartments of the train derailed due to the blast near Anrawah Railway Station of Kashmore.
The official further cited initial investigations to add that the blast was carried out by a remote-controlled device and the explosive materials were installed at the railway track.
Quoting an injured passenger, press reports said that there were nearly 300 people on the train cars that derailed and that many people were still trapped inside.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The site of the explosion has been cordoned off by a heavy contingent of Pakistani police and paramilitary troops for investigations.
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attack. He has also directed hospital authorities to provide the best possible medical treatment to those that were injured in the terrorist incident.
