A state funeral has been held for former governor-general Sir Zelman Cowen.
FORMER Governor-General Sir Zelman Cowen was today remembered as a dignified man who healed a nation in turmoil.
More than a thousand mourners attended Sir Zelman’s state funeral at Temple Beth Israel in St Kilda today.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Premier Ted Baillieu and former prime ministers Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke and John Howard were among those to pay their respects.
Sir Zelman was sworn in as the 19th Governor-General in December 1977 following his predecessor Sir John Kerr’s dismissal of the Whitlam Government.
His acclaimed public life included his election as the Rhodes Scholar for Victoria, his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of the Law at the age of just 31 and service as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.
His son Rabbi Dr Shimon Cowen said his father dedicated his life to humanity.

“As Governor-General, Dad rebuilt and healed a divided nation,” he said.
Rabbi Dr John Levi, who delivered the eulogy, said no one who lived through Sir Zelman’s term of office would forget the dignity he brought to the role.
“He had a deep sense of what was right and wrong and he lived his chosen profession into life,” he said.
MP Josh Frydenberg, who developed a special friendship with Sir Zelman as a young law student, said the Rhodes Scholar never attempted to distance himself from his Jewish heritage.
He said Sir Zelman’s love for his wife Anna knew no bounds and he was often known to say that he looked at her with wonder.
“It is our nation’s great fortune that such a gifted and principled man devoted himself to public life,” he said.
