The death of a man in an inner Sydney unit block is being treated as suspicious even though there are no signs of injuries on his body.
The Caucasian man in his fifties was discovered in the common area of the housing commission block on Walker Street, Waterloo, by another male resident at 4.30am (AEDT) on Boxing Day.
Detective Superintendent Luke Freudenstein said a cause of death was yet to established, but police are not ruling out the possibility of a drug overdose.
“It is a suspicious death due to the circumstances in which the person was found,” he told reporters.
The dead man was seen in the street where he lived on Christmas Day about 6pm, and police believe the body had been in the unit block for a few hours before it was found.
“The person was going through the common area of the block of units, I believe putting their garbage out, and saw something unusual,” Supt Freudenstein said.
He said the dead man, who possibly lived alone, was previously known to police.
“We do believe we know who the person is but he has not been formally identified,” he said.
“We believe the person did live in the building.”
At the time of his death, the man was wearing a red and white Aussie Rules singlet, grey shorts and blue and white thongs.
An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday morning, and next of kin have been contacted.
CCTV footage may have captured the man in his final hours.
