A 34-year-old Melbourne man has suffered serious head injuries after a firecracker exploded in his face during a backyard party.
Advanced life support paramedics, intensive care paramedics and a paramedic team manager were called to a house in the suburb of Tarneit, southwest Melbourne, just after midnight on Sunday.
A large number of people were present, senior paramedic team manager Brett Parker said.
“The man was unconscious and suffering significant head injuries from the cracker,” Mr Parker said.
“An off-duty nurse who was in the street came over to assist.
“Due to the serious head injuries, intensive care paramedics put the man into a coma and took over breathing for him.
“He was taken to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.”
A relative of the injured man also collapsed, suffering from chest pains, and was taken to Western Hospital in Footscray in a stable condition, Mr Parker added.
It was the second serious firecracker injury in a matter of hours.
Just after 10pm (AEDT) on Saturday, a man suffered a serious eye injury and burns to the face when a firecracker went off in his face at Preston, north Melbourne.
Paramedic Peter Crane said it was believed the 49-year-old man had been holding the cracker when he was injured.
The man suffered superficial burns to his face and a serious eye injury. “It’s possible some of the firecracker went into his eye,” Mr Crane said.
“The man was having a New Year’s Eve party with some friends at his house. It’s an awful accident which highlights the dangers of fireworks.”
The injured man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
