‘US-led forces must leave Afghanistan’

On Sunday, a US soldier opened fire on Afghan civilians inside their homes, killing at least 17 and injuring several others in the district of Panjwaii in southern Kandahar Province.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has condemned the bloodshed, calling it an inhuman, intentional, and unforgivable act.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Afghanistan’s former Prime Minster Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai to further discuss the issue.

The following is a transcription of the interview.

Press TV: US President Obama has said the massacre of 17 innocent Afghan civilians in their homes -in his words – “does not represent the US military”; but, of course, it’s coming in the wake of the burning of the Holy Qur’an, US soldiers urinating on the bodies of dead Afghan fighters, the killing of ordinary Afghans in night raids, and the use of depleted uranium. These are issues that have come up in recent months. Do you see then the massacre of these civilians by American soldiers as an isolated incident or, as some say, a systemic pattern?

Shah Ahmadzai: Yeah, these actions from the people who have killed innocent people including children by American forces cannot be called sudden or unintentional. They have done so many killings – intentionally they are doing this. We don’t know why they are doing this.

The only reason that we have clear is that the people are Muslims. And these forces in Afghanistan, they want to…the country with his hidden [agendas]. And this is impossible. They are facing a terrible reaction of the people and they will not succeed in their mission at all even if they stay for another hundred years.

That’s why we are telling them to get out of this country as soon as possible. As far as these NATO forces are here in Afghanistan, peace will never come to this country at all.

We are very, very upset why these people are doing these things. It’s not only one man. They announced that this man had some psychological problems, but this is unacceptable. In these killings, it’s not only one person. A group of people are involved in these killings.

Their apology and they showing sympathy to the Afghans, this is not the way they [should be acting].

The only way is that they should get out of this country as soon as possible.

Press TV: Mr. Ahmadzai, we know that up until now Afghans MPs say that the people of Afghanistan have run out of patience with foreign troops. And Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said the killing of civilians was an “unforgivable” act. What do you think Afghanistan can do now as the killings by US-led troops continue in your country?

Shah Ahmadzai: The only thing that we are asking President Karzai is to have a firm stand against these kinds of actions. And he is the president of this country; we are supporting him if he asks the American forces to go out.

This is the only way for the country to be safe. The foreign troops must go out. There is no [other] way.

We are asking President Karzai to tell these military forces to get out of Afghanistan. This is the only way.

Press TV: So, basically, Mr. Ahmadzai, you believe that even if President Karzai does make that call, however, is that going to happen – the US-led troops are willing or are prepared to leave Afghanistan?

Shah Ahmadzai: No, we are asking our president to give a statement and tell them to go out of this country. Sometimes when they do these kinds of actions, he shows some sympathy to the Afghan people, but this is not enough. As a president, he must go and [take this] action which is the initiative to now leave our country and leave the Afghan state.
