A man has survived 12 hours trapped in a car that had flipped onto its roof and was submerged in an irrigation channel in northern Victoria.
Police believe the 33-year-old from Kerang was stuck for 12 hours before a passerby spotted him in the channel beside the Kerang-Koondrook road yesterday morning, Nine News reports.
The car was submerged in about one metre of water and the man survived in a small air pocket until he was discovered.
It took emergency services two hours to free the man through the car’s window and they used a local farmer’s tractor to drag the vehicle from the channel.
The man was taken to Kerang hospital and later transferred to Swan Hill Hospital with minor injuries, including exhaustion.
Kerang police constable Travis Collier said it “almost a miracle” the man survived the ordeal.
“He’s extremely lucky this passerby took the time not only to have a look and see that there was a car upside down in the channel but they also had the presence of mind to see if someone was in there,” he said.
Police are investigating how the car ended up in the channel and said the incident may be related to fatigue or alcohol.
