Indonesian President Jokowi visits South Korea

 nsnbc : Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) left for the South Korean capital Seoul on Sunday for an official State visit starting May 18. Jokowi’s visit to Seoul aims at boosting bilateral relations and at discussing regional issues.

Jokowi_IndonesiaPresident Jokowi departed from Indonesia aboard the presidential aircraft “Indonesia One” at 9:05 a.m. local time on Sunday. Jokowi is accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution and Trade Minister Thomas Lembong.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and the Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Franky Sibarani went to Seoul ahead of Jokowi who was also scheduled to meet with members of the Indonesian community in South Korea Sunday evening.

On Monday President Jokowi meets South Korean President Park Geun-hye for talks about bilateral relations as well as other political, economic and socio-cultural issues. The two are expected to pen a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on several fields including creative industry and innovation, forestry, peat land, trade and others.

South Korea is the fifth-biggest investor in Indonesia with a total investment reaching US$1.2 billion while trade between the two countries peaked at US$30 billion in 2011. Jokowi is also scheduled to hold business meetings including a one-on-one meeting and a round-table discussion with 20 of the biggest businessmen in South Korea.

President Jokowi is also scheduled to hold business meetings, including a one-on-one meeting and a luncheon round table discussion, with 20 biggest businessmen in South Korea.  Minister Retno Marsudi earlier informed that South Korea is one of the main partners of Indonesia when it comes to trade, investment and tourism.

Indonesia also plans to partner with South Korea to expedite the pace of industrialization in the country, she said. From South Korea, Jokowi will proceed to Sochi, Russia, for ASEAN- Russia Summit.  He will stay in Russia until May 20, and is expected to return to Jakarta on May 21.

Although it was not officially published as part of the agenda, Jokowi and Geun-hye are likely to also discuss progress with regard to Indonesia’s cooperation on the delivery of South Korean submarines this year, tensions in the South China Sea, and Seoul’s recent demand that Indonesia takes a more firm stance with regard to North Korea’s nuclear tests and missile development. Indonesia maintains that it is neutral but actively pursues  a policy aimed at deescalating tensions between the north and the south of the divided country.
