Abbott says Thomson story not believable

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says Craig Thomson’s explanation of his alleged misuse of union funds isn’t believable and is only being maintained as an alibi so Prime Minister Julia Gillard can continue to rely on his support in parliament.

Mr Abbott said Mr Thomson needs to make an absolutely complete and candid explanation to the parliament, to the people of Australia and those agencies investigating “this whole sordid, squalid mess”.

“I don’t think anyone believes his story. Fair Work Australia didn’t believe his story. I don’t think the Australian public will believe his story either,” he told reporters in Sydney.

“This story is essentially to provide the prime minister with an alibi. It’s all about giving Julia Gillard an alibi so she can keep clinging to his vote.”

Mr Abbott said Ms Gillard needed to explain whether Mr Thomson told her the same story.

“And is that why for so many months she has been declaring full confidence in Craig Thomson,” he said.

In his first public explanations of allegations of misuse of union funds while an official of the Health Services Union, Mr Thomson, now a Labor MP, denied any wrongdoing, accusing a rival official of setting him up in an elaborate plot involving prostitutes in order to ruin his political career.

Mr Thomson has undertaken to make an explanation to parliament when it resumes later this month.

The opposition has demanded the government reject Mr Thomson’s vote on the floor of parliament.

Mr Abbott said Ms Gillard, if she was fair dinkum, would disown his vote in parliament.

“You cannot disown him from the caucus and cling to him in the parliament,” he said.

“This whole protection racket that has been run for so long by the Labor Party for Craig Thomson’s benefit has basically been about propping up Julia Gillard and her government.”

Mr Abbott accused Ms Gillard of “shifty evasions” about what she or her staff knew about Mr Thomson, when they knew about it, and their knowledge about the NSW Labor Party’s payment of his legal bills.

He said there was an implausibility about suggestions that Ms Gillard knew nothing of this until very recently.

“These aren’t just allegations against Craig Thomson,” he said.

“These are findings of fact that have been made against him by a quasi-judicial body.”
