A U.S. soldier was ordered to remove an American flag from his property, according to press reports in Alabama.
The condominium association ordered the Alabama soldier and his wife to remove an American flag outside their condo. The move has sparked a heated debate on social media websites.
A local television news station reported that Sergeant Brandon Weir and his wife, Lauren, of Huntsville, received a note from the owner of the complex Monday stating that the flag violates the rules of the association.
The note urged the couple to remove the flag as soon as possible to keep the community tidy, according to the report.
After Weir published the note on the facebook pages of several support groups for veterans, the story went viral and a group of citizens went to the house and raised even more flags in protest, the station reported.
The facebook note so far has received more than 2,500 “likes” as of this report.
The property manager, Carol Coffey, has been flooded with phone calls and emails in support of the soldier. She said that the note was not intended as an attack on the American flag.
“I served in Afghanistan, I served in Iraq and I served in Kuwait. I am not an anti-veteran and I am not a communist,” Coffey told the television news station.
Coffey added that the association is considering to revise the statutes to allow a number of American flags outside each unit.
