On December 10, 2017, Popular Resistance is beginning a new phase.

As we count down to that date, we are featuring some of the people behind Popular Resistance.

Evan Greer is a transgender activist and musician living in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the Campaign Director for Fight for the Future, which works to protect Internet Freedom. Evan served as an interim editor of Popular Resistance in the spring of 2014 and she assisted Popular Resistance in improving our social media skills early on.

Popular Resistance and Fight for the Future worked together closely in 2014 and 2015 to win reclassification of the Internet as a common carrier in order to protect net neutrality. That campaign started with an eight-day occupation of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, DC, and progressed through a series of actions including disruptions of FCC hearings, a musical in front of the FCC, actions at the White House, blocking the chairman’s driveway and more.

When the new chair of the FCC announced his intentions to dismantle that hard-won net neutrality last spring, Popular Resistance created the Protect Our Internet campaign and continues to work closely with Fight for the Future and other allies to save net neutrality.

Evan explains why she supports Popular Resistance:

“Popular Resistance is exactly the type of organization and news source that we need right now in these times.

It’s very rare that there are organizations that are willing to take the type of actions that we need to take to make change in the world right now, but who also have a strong sense of strategy and an understanding of how our political system works, the ways in which it’s broken and how we can engage with it in ways that make it better for everyone.”

Organizations such as Popular Resistance and Fight for the Future play strategic roles in coalitions for social change because we have the flexibility to take bold and creative actions where other organizations cannot.
