Moves to lift a 25-year ban on uranium exploration in NSW is a brave decision by the state government, a mining industry expert says.
NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell said he wants to lift the 25-year-old ban to cash in on the mining boom.
“It’s an interesting decision, politically probably brave decision,” Professor David Laurence, the director of the Australian Centre for Sustainable Mining Practices, told AAP.
“But it’s a positive move to be able to get an idea of the inventory of mineral resources in the whole of the state including uranium.
“I don’t think uranium should be treated any different to any other commodity.
“Having a ban on one commodity or another is putting our head in the sand.
“Let’s see what’s there before we make any decision on land use.”
Prof Laurence said environmental impacts should be assessed when an area is reserved for mining.
“If it’s in an environmentally sensitive area then probably there’s no role for mining,” he said.
“But if it’s in an area where the environmental values can be assessed then it’s up to society through government to a make a decision.”
He said attitudes were changing and now was probably the best time to lift the ban.
“The debate has been changing over the years,” Prof Laurence said.
“Certainly younger people seem to be taking a different attitude now towards all energy including uranium.
“So maybe politically it is the time to be able to do it.”
