Saudi’s ‘ill-willed’ executions slammed

“We don’t consider the Saudi act as a simple measure and there are definitely political and ill intentions behind the move,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Wednesday.

He said the executed individuals’ charges of drug possession have not been substantiated for Iran and added, “The Islamic Republic will use all political, diplomatic and human rights tools to restore the rights of its citizens and will consider an appropriate response to the Saudi move.”

The Iranian diplomat said that the move was unexpected as no Iranian nationals had been executed in a Persian Gulf littoral state for the past forty years.

On measures taken so far in reaction to the executions, he said that diplomatic visits by Iranian officials to the country have been suspended and the Saudi chargé d’affaires to Tehran was also summoned.

He added that a legal-consular delegation will also arrive in Riyadh over the issue.

After reports about the execution of Iranian inmates in Saudi jails were confirmed, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Saudi Arabia’s chargé d’ affaires on June 11.

The foreign ministry expressed the Islamic Republic’s strong objection to the executions, announcing that Tehran will pursue the case via relevant international bodies.

The prisoners were among a group of Iranian sailors who were arrested on a fishing boat in international waters 70 miles off the coast of Saudi Arabia six years ago on charges of drug possession.
