The two protests, called by activists on social media, were staged outside Cairo’s major mosques of Mostafa Mahmoud and Al Istikama. During the dispersal, several protesters were reportedly arrested.

In a statement published on its Facebook page Thursday, Egypt’s Interior Ministry urged Egyptians “not to get carried away by tendentious calls for protests and it warns against any attempts to break the law.”

The ministry also said it would take all legal measures against demonstrators.

A group of unknown Facebook users have launched a page titled ‘The Land is the Honor,’ and called on Egyptians who reject the decision to take to the streets after Friday noon prayers in major Egyptian cities.

The calls came after Egypt agreed to give the two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia in a maritime demarcation agreement signed last week during Saudi King Salman’s visit to Egypt.
