India to export 60K tons of sugar to Iran

“Indian Traders have contracted exports of 60,000 tons of raw sugar to Iran and the first vessel of 19,800 tons is being loaded at a Mumbai port,” an unnamed source with the Indian unit of a global trading company told Reuters on Monday.

The exports, the source added, are within the ceiling of two million tons of sales already allowed by New Delhi under the Open General License (OGL) scheme and are meant for March-April delivery.

The source said Tehran may buy more sugar from India, the world’s biggest producer of sugar after Brazil, adding, “Until September, Iran needs to import about 324,000 tons of raw sugar.”

Confirming the deal, another source noted that Iran will receive the entire quantity between “now and end-April.”

According to figures released by the London-based International Sugar Organization, Iran is expected to import 1.6 million tons of sugar during 2011 and 2012. The Islamic Republic, ISO added, bought 1.8 million tons of sugar in 2010.

A delegation of 80 Indian exporters headed by Indian Joint Commerce Secretary Arvind Mehta, arrived in Tehran on March 10, for a five-day visit to discuss the expansion of trade ties between the two nations.

Following the trip, head of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations, Rafeeq Ahmed, described the visit as “very successful.”

“We saw a lot of interest from the Iranians in buying Indian goods…We talked about the excellent opportunities in food grains, food processing, pharmaceuticals, auto parts and other areas,” he added.

Iran is India’s second-largest oil supplier as New Delhi purchases nearly USD 12 billion worth of Iranian crude every year, about 12 percent of its total consumption.

The US and European Union charge Iran with pursuing military goals under the cover of its peaceful nuclear energy program and have imposed several rounds of international and unilateral sanctions against Iran to force the country to give up its nuclear energy work.

Tehran refutes their allegations saying that frequent inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency have never found any diversion in Iran’s nuclear energy program toward military purposes.
